Jennifer Lopez was late to her appearance on “Ellen” for Wednesday’s show thanks to her controversial appearance at the Grammy Awards for its Motown tribute. But she certainly brought her A-Rod game to the show when she arrived.
Jennifer spent the bulk of the episode having to hear about how she’s turning 50 this summer, and in celebration she revealed that she’s taking her live show on the road.
“I’m going on a U.S. tour,” she said. “It’s called ‘It’s My Party.'” Tour dates and ticket prices aren’t known yet, but she’s looking at a shorter tour running through June and July and hitting less than 30 venues.
Don’t worry, though, this one is intended to be a Jennifer Lopez tribute rather than a Motown tribute.
The singer recently defended her Latin-infused tribute to the iconic label, saying, “The thing about music is that it inspires all. Any type of music can inspire any type of artist. You can’t tell people what to love. You can’t tell people what they can and can’t do, what they should sing or not sing. You gotta do what’s in your heart.”
Nevertheless, plenty of people were telling J.Lo that they didn’t love her performance at all as it didn’t feel like it was telling the story of Motown at all. Smokey Robinson, who joined her on stage, also defended her performance even before it happened. Clearly they anticipated this negative reaction.
Ellen, on the other hand, didn’t go there at all, simply praising Jennifer’s overall talent as an entertainer — which was not in dispute — and marveling at what a fast-paced and adrenaline-infused show she put on.
Later in the show, Ellen introduced J.Lo to the dress she absolutely should wear to the Oscars. In the spirit of her “Second Act” premiere dress so enormous it took a van to transport her to the event, Ellen had a lovely orange dress brought down from the back of the studio with a train so long we couldn’t see the end of it.
Of course, that only challenged J.Lo to pull the whole thing in. And honestly, it kind of looked like she was intrigued at the prospect, though she admitted she’d feel at least a little bad for whoever had to sit next to her.
In honor of her birthday, Ellen had another gift for her. This one was an enormous clock with a beautiful picture of J.Lo and A-Rod together. “It’s basically to remind him that time is ticking and he should hurry up and propose,” Ellen hinted.
“I’m going to give him this for Valentine’s Day,” Jennifer laughed. “Your time’s almost up.”
She then shared an adorable story that proved A-Rod listens to her, and heard her obsession with the home improvement show “Fixer Upper.” The couple own a modest lake house in need of some of Joanne Gaines’ expertise, but she doesn’t work outside of Waco, Texas.
And yet, somehow Alex orchestrated a “meeting” and surprised Jennifer with a one-on-one consultation with Joanne. “I’m looking at him and I was like, ‘Oh, you listen to me. Like, I love you. Like, you are so amazing,'” Jennifer gushed. “It really blew me away.”
Finally, Ellen felt it was time for Jennifer to sit in the hot seat and play a game of “Burning Questions” so she could ask questions with potentially dirty answers and see what J.Lo has to say about that.
When asked about her favorite body part, Jennifer paused and said, “My abs.” Ellen interpreted the pause as, “There’s so many things to be proud of, and I’m like trying to think of one that I’m proud of.”
She finally settled on her smile. But the real fun came when she asked Jennifer to name her favorite body part on A-Rod’s body. Jennifer knew exactly where she was going with this one, but was determined not to give it to her.
“I’m gonna say, I love his arms,” she said. She then turned the question around on Ellen, which might have been a mistake.
“My favorite part of A-Rod? I love his penis,” Ellen said. “I really do.”
“You’re a sick person,” Jennifer said between fits of laughter. “You are a sick person. Wow.”
There were plenty of other questions, but it all came around full circle with Ellen’s final questions: What’s a silly thing you’re afraid of. Jennifer’s answer was rats.
Ellen said, “I’m afraid of A-Rod’s penis. It’s still my favorite thing, and yet I’m scared of it.”
